Impossible Task...please some help

I know that this is probably an impossible task...but, I need some help trying to find out about my great grandfather.

Basically, my great-grandfather came over from Ireland sometime from 1829-37, landed in North Carolina... was a member of the IRA and was running for his life from the English... he was early 20s.... and that's pretty much all I know. I don't know surname, clan, what he did, which part of Ireland he was from, etc. ....I know it's probably an impossible task after all this time, but, I am really hoping that there might be something/someway of finding out some more information.

I don't know where to go from here, any help would be appreciated!
