    NEWS SNAPS FROM IRELAND
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    INFLATION TOPS 6% - THREATENS ECONOMIC STABILITY
    The Irish inflation rate (the cost of living rate) has
    reached 6.25% - its highest level for 15 years. The recently
    agreed Programme for Prosperity and Fairness is already
    under threat as Unions and Welfare groups complain about the
    erosion of the benefits provided  in the agreement,
    maintaining that the deal was based on a 3% inflation level.
    Increases in the price of houses, food, drink and
    especially fuel have pushed the inflation figure higher
    despite the Government measures to try to counter the
    problem.
    The next budget is due in December by which time the
    Government is hopeful that the inflation rate will have
    fallen back somewhat. The Government is committed to tax
    breaks in the budget which is likely to be the last
    before the next General Election. They will therefore
    want to keep voters happy and are likely to give
    significant tax reductions.
    In the interim, Bertie Ahearn's coalition are considering
    new measures including:
    * Cuts in VAT or excise duty (most probably in the cost
    of motor fuel which has risen by 40% since the start of
    the year)
    * The scrapping of the Grocery Provisions Order which
    prevents below cost selling on staple goods such as
    bread and milk. (likely to be opposed by the various
    'small business' organisations)
    * Mandatory price orders (possibly aimed at motor fuel)
    EIRCOM SHARES FALL BY 33% SINCE FLOTATION
    Shares in the formerly Government owned telecommunication
    company are the most widely held in Ireland but there
    performance has been very poor, dropping by 33% since the
    company was floated on the Stock Exchange.
    Despite this, CEO Alfie Kane was awarded a bonus of
    nearly IR£1.5 Million last year.
    IRISH DEFENCE FORCES BATTLE FOR RECRUITS WITH ENGLISH ARMY
    The Irish Defence Force is being ignored by potential
    recruits who instead are opting for the English Army where
    pay and prospects are better. A middle of the range
    private soldier in England earns STG£15,500 supplemented
    by overseas benefits. An Irish private earns IR£13,000.
    The fact that 4 English pounds are now worth 5 Irish punts
    further increases the difference.
    A 200 year old concession means that Irish recruits can
    serve in the English forces without any citizenship
    problems.
    ALCOHOL ADVERTISING IN SPORT TO BE EXAMINED
    The possibility of a ban on drink advertising in Irish
    sporting events is a real possibility following the
    announcement that the matter is to be examined by a
    Government committee.
    It is currently illegal to advertise Tobacco products at
    Irish sporting events and the new development has left
    Guinness (the famous drink company) and Murphy's (a Cork
    based Company) wondering if their sponsorship of the
    All-Ireland Hurling Championship and the Irish Golf
    Open is in doubt.
    Although Ireland now suffers one of Europe's worst rates
    of underage drinking, Guinness have hit out at the new
    proposal, indicating that the real problem is the ease
    with which young people have access to alcohol.
    CALL FOR CAR SPEED CAPABILITIES TO BE LIMITED
    Former Government Minister Gay Mitchell has called for the
    establishment of a Government committee to examine why cars
    sold in Ireland can be driven at speeds of up to 130mph
    while the maximum speed limit is 70 mph. Surveys have
    shown that men in the 17-25 year old age group now cause
    more than half of all road traffic accidents and nearly
    one third of all fatalities.
    IRELAND TO OVERTAKE GERMANY BY 2006
    A new report by Goodbody Stockbrokers has indicated that
    Ireland can overtake Germany and become the third wealthiest
    country in Europe by 2006. Average income will rise to
    £25,807 by 2006, compared with an estimate in Germany of
    £21,351 and in the UK of £20,478. Denmark and Luxembourg
    currently occupy the top positions in Europe in this regard.
    The report states that the economy will grow by 10.6% this
    year, just below the record growth rate in 1997.
    The report identified the shortage of labour as a threat to
    the new found economic prosperity and stated that an
    effective immigration policy should be created to encourage
    an influx of skilled workers into the economy.
    ANCIENT KERRY TAX DODGE BRINGS IN IR£1.5M
    Nearly 200 years ago Daniel O'Connell ('the liberator')
    started a goat fair for farmers in Killorglin so that local
    landlord Sir Harmann Blennerhasset could generate some
    revenue without interference from the Dublin authorities.
    The 'Puck Fair' was born and the annual tradition now
    involves the capture of 'King Puck', a goat, in the wilds
    surrounding the tiny Kerry town.
    This year it took five men to haul the goat back into the
    town to be crowned. Blennerhasset raised 500 pounds for his
    goat fair but the modern event generates over IR£1.5M as
    100,000 tourists pack the area.
    SPORT: 36 IRISH SOCCER PLAYS LINE OUT IN ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP
    The new Soccer season is about to start in England and the
    cream of Irish talent are represented. Leeds United lead
    the way with seven Irish players being given squad numbers.
    The Leeds manager is Irishman Dave O'Leary. Middlesboro
    and Sunderland each have five Irish players.
    6 clubs feature no Irishman in their squads: Everton,
    Arsenal, West Ham, Chelsea, Leicester City and Southampton.
    SPORT: SONIA O'SULLIVAN PREPARES FOR OLYMPICS
    The Cobh athlete Sonia O'Sullivan recovered from recent
    disappointing form when she finished second in a high
    quality 3000 Metre race in Zurich. This represents her
    fastest time over this distance in 6 years and gives her
    a realistic chance of atoning for her Atlanta failures
    by claiming that all elusive Olympic medal.
    HOW TO FIND AN IRISH PENPAL
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    1. Register for free at Cara Irish Penpals:

                  http://www.irishpenpals.com

    2. Carefully enter your details. Pay particular care to the
       'interests' and message' options. Make them as appealing
       as possible.
    3. Log-in and search for Irish Penpals that you are
       interested in communicating with.
    4. Narrow your search by selecting a particular
       characteristic to search by. For example: you can narrow
       your search to only include penpals who live in Ireland
       or to penpals that are only interested in music, etc.
    5. Keep a record when you send an email from the online
       facility at the site.
    6. Don't take it personally! It seems to be much easier to
       ignore an email message - much harder to ignore an actual
       paper letter sent through the post. Everyone is guilty of
       this so don't despair if you do not get any replies
       immediately.
    7. Persevere - keep at it! Keep trying until you get a
       response. All of the penpals that have registered at the
       site ARE interested in communicating with people of Irish
       descent worldwide.
    8. Make sure you reply to any emails that are sent to you -
       even if your response is not positive, please let the
       penpal who emailed you know that!
    9. Keep your listing updated - Change the wording of your
       registration to encourage more responses
    10. Be responsible - remember that this service may be used
       by kids (of all ages) so no bad language or offensive
       emails.

    ENJOY!

    IN SEARCH OF MY IRISH ROOTS by Michael McDonald
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    All my life people have been telling me that I look Irish,
    which to me, is a great compliment. Although my last name
    is 100% Scottish Highland on the surface, it hides emerald
    green roots. I have been on an eleven year pilgrimage to
    find out and prove to myself - if it is true. I have come to
    one conclusion which is, if any histories written about
    ancestry are true and valid, it must be so that the Scottish
    clan name of MacDonald does conceal Irish bloodlines.
    It all began when I was eleven years old and I saw the movie
    'Darby O'Gill and the Little People', starring Sean Connery.
    It was 1959 and I was completely enraptured with the whole
    idea of Ireland, its people and culture. From that moment
    on - I wanted to be Irish. However, being Irish meant being
    Catholic, a denomination not tolerated in Shreveport
    Louisiana - the deep South 'Bible Belt' of America. As an
    impressionable young man I was led to believe that our name
    was Protestant Scottish. I didn't buy that story at first
    but as the years went on I half-heartedly accepted the fact
    that I was not really of Irish extraction and dismissed it,
    though keeping the embers for the Emerald Isle smoldering
    deep in my heart.
    In 1989 all of that negative anti-Irish propaganda would
    change. That was the year I went to a Celtic festival for
    the first time in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and found out
    that my suspicions were correct. I approached the Scottish
    booths where different clans were on display with
    interesting information and printed histories of our clans.
    I took a pamphlet from a Clan Donald representative and to
    my surprise, saw something which all but took my breath
    away. At the top of our genealogy chart was none other than
    Conn of Tara, and the beginning of our long and detailed
    history. There were also other clans such as Cholla Uais,
    Prince of Ireland and Fergus Mor Mac Erc, King of Dalriada,
    who moved his Irish kingdom to Scotland around the year
    500 A.D. The more I read about our history, the more I want
    to learn. I now have my own miniature library of countless
    books which deal with the subject of Ireland's colony in
    Scotland, named after the Irish Scots who had colonized
    Scotland.
    In 1993 I had the privilege of visiting Scotland and the
    Clan Donald center on the Isle of Skye. On the way there I
    asked a Scotsman, dressed in typical attire, if he knew
    where the Clan Donals center was. His reply still resonates
    in my head. He replied with an air of defiant respect:
    'Aye but you're lucky I'm tellin' ya - I'm a Campbell!'.
    The Campbells and the McDonalds were once bitter enemies.
    We both laughed loudly and I thanked him for the information.
    Before I drove away I told him: 'The Campbells haven't quite
    finished the job - I have some rough, rowdy and loud
    MacDonald uncles I'll pay you to take care of'. Just kidding
    of course.
    During the years of my research I had some funny
    occurrences. At one Irish festival I tried to tell one
    gentleman of my Irish roots and he defiantly told me I was
    crazy - that I was not Irish. I told him if he wanted proof
    I would gladly supply him with it but he all but told me to
    get lost. His son and daughter were there also and they told
    me they knew all about my clan's Irish roots but that their
    father was old fashioned and no one could tell him any
    different. I have had similar instances at all-Scottish games.
    The thing that bothers me most is that we Irish and
    Highlanders are of the same Gaelic bloodlines and share the
    same ancestry.  What difference should religion or alliance to
    one government or another make when it comes to family ties.
    At times I have to laugh because people have been taught
    prejudice at an early age so as not to dig too deeply and open
    their hearts and minds to what is the truth about their
    backgrounds and cultures. I have heard some vague excuses and
    comical reasoning as to why we are separated. We are two sides
    on the one coin. We are brothers and sisters of the ancient
    race of Celts who colonized Ireland centuries before the life
    of Christ. Some emigrated from mainland Europe to Scotland
    while others settled in Ireland.
    My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap that separates us. I
    feel it is high time to recognise our similarities instead
    of dwelling on our differences. Other groups with far less
    in common have done this so why can't we. There are two
    basic myths I would like to dispel. The first one is that
    the prefix Mc means you are Irish whilst Mac means you are
    Scottish. Not True!
    The second is that the Scots began in Scotland. If it were
    not for the Irish crossing over from 'Scotia' (a Latin word
    meaning 'Ireland'), the present day country of Scotland
    would probably be called 'Pictavia'. There was a deliberate
    migration and implanting of bona fide Irish-Gaelic bloodlines,
    culture, customs, lineage, language, religion and
    ultimately a changing of the history of a country once
    dominated by a race of people known as the 'Picts' - who
    could not be called 'Scots' by any means.
    I could go on for many more pages outlining the historical
    facts, quoting endless sources and giving countless
    references. The bottom line is: together we are twice as
    many as we are apart and 200% stronger together than
    separate, so now my question to ye of Gaelic descent is this:
    Why can't we get it together?
    James Michael McDonald.
    WAR!			by Davina Flanagan-Wilson
    ~~~~

    'Why won't you believe I wrote this?'

    .......asked the teary-eyed 10 year old of her Irish mother.

    'You know I like poetry!'

    Davina attends school in Sussex in the South of England. Her
    mother is from Dublin and maintains that at least part of her
    child's imagination is inspired by her Irish background.

    Her schoolteacher set her pupils a task: to create something
    that would be performed in front of the entire school. This
    is Davina's poem.
    			WAR!

    	Peace is nowhere to be found,
    	Dead bodies scattered on the ground.
    	Death is growing, wars not going,
    	Childrens faces no longer glowing

    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM
    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM

    	Feeling of death is here!
    	People shout and scream with fear
    	In the dark cold street
    	the smell of dead meat
    	high above the clouds
    	follows a bomb right into town

    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM
    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM

    	People duck and cover their heads
    	Some people still tucked away in bed
    	Fire is all that I can see
    	Burning houses, falling down trees

    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM
    	The guns go BANG, the Cannons go BOOM

    	My parents are nowhere to be found
    	Perhaps they are lying on the ground
    	What a tragedy this would be
    	Everythings gone, but little me!

    	WAR!

    OWN AN IRISH WEBSITE
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ever longed to own your own website? Not just a free page on
    YAHOO or GEOCITIES but a genuine fully functional web site:
    Perhaps you would name it:
    	www.patrick-byrne.com
    	www.marybyrnes-irishdancing.com
    	www.1234ireland.com
    (note: these are fictional web sites as at 17 August 2000)
    Here is what is required:
    1. Register a domain name
    (i.e. 1234ireland.com or patrick-byrne.com or whatever)
    Cost: Approx US$50 for 2 years, $25 per year afterwards
    depending on the Internet Registrar you choose.
    2. Find a Web Host to 'store' your files so that they can
    be viewed on the Internet.
    Cost: Free services provide everything but require you to
    place 'banner advertisements' on any pages you create. Paid
    services vary in cost and service but can be acquired for
    between US$10 to US$40 per month (and upwards!).
    3. Create your web site. If your site is about Irish dancing
    then you might have 3 pages within your site. The first
    would give a history of Irish dancing with some pictures.
    The second might list the services and products you provide
    regarding Irish dancing, the third might give a list of links
    to other Irish dancing sites.
    4. Promote your web site. Register your site with the major
    search engines so that people can find it when they enter
    'irish dancing' into the search engines.
    5. Make your web site pay its way. Join an affiliate program
    so that visitors to your web site can access free information
    while you get your web site expenses paid. Consider starting
    an online business actually selling goods and services.
    A daunting task? Perhaps!
    The Information about Ireland site will offer to create
    fully functional web sites to its visitors with everything
    provided.
    This new service will be available next month but in the
    meantime we will create 3 fully functional web sites
    ABSOLUTELY FREE of charge to 3 lucky readers of this
    newsletter. The web site costs above still apply (i.e. we
    have no control of the cost of registering a domain or of
    hosting a site) but we will create and install your web
    site and then hand it over to you - FREE!
    Please THINK first about this. Remember you will have to
    pay for the domain name and any future hosting charges.
    We do not control these charges. Send in your idea for a
    web site to Click here to contact us
    Possibilities include:
    * A web site about your Irish ancestry
    * A web site about your business
    * A fan web site
    * A site detailing how you grew Sunflowers from seed
    ......or whatever!!!
    This is limited to 3 suggestions that we receive. If your
    suggestion is not selected then we will send you a detailed
    document outlining the steps necessary to achieve your
    web site creation. The 3 selected sites will be featured
    in the next newsletter.
    Don't wait around while the rest of the world gets on board
    the Internet - tell us your idea!
