Litter in Ireland

We just returned from a 15 day trip to Ireland.(We live in USA) Our route took us from Dublin to Wexford to Doolin to Donegal thru NI back to Dublin. We were shocked that people there were so casual about letting their litter blow about and just dropping their food wrappers and such on the ground. We thought Americans were terrible about litter and never imagined that the Irish would be worse but public areas on beaches, etc were far worse than here. Hope the government campaign helps. Of course, no amount of government coercian or bullying will solve it entirely. Education is the key. We did like the fact that stores did not give out plastic bags willy-nilly. We did not see plastic bags everywhere as we have here in the USA. Was a great trip and the Irish are as friendly as advertised.
