I grew up in Monaloe when it was a coutry village on the Dublin - Bray road. Our house and most of the others had two rooms, no bathroom or toilet. No electricity till Mr Marchbanks ( a contractor ) installed it just after the war. One bulb in each room and one power plug. No sewrage in the village and water was obtained from the "fountain" a village tap on the side of the road. I left in 1955 and did not return for forty years. Now here in the Antipodes, I have been back several times and the conclusion I form is that people there have more problems dealing with their prosperity than we ever had dealing with our poverty.
